An urban tale, contemporary legend, urban legend is a form of modern folklore consisting of stories that may or may not have been believed by their tellers to be true. An urban legend might sound believable, but it can include details that turn out to be impossible. The teller of an urban legend may claim it to have happened to a friend of a friend, who happens to be just outside the circle of acquaintances of the listener. In reality, the story is often international, having passed on from one continent to another. Bobby is a working class hero born in Queens. He began painting graffiti in the New York Subway in the early 1970s. Today Bobby runs two car junkyards on the outskirts of Long Island.
Frank is a Finnish graffiti legend, who is also known as the most urban guy of Helsinki. Bobby has promised to employ Frank in his Monster’s Cars junkyard. Frank’s journey to Bobby is a symbolic pilgrimage to the secret sources of urban culture.
The work seen in Sorbus gallery is an urban legend. It is based on an intervention that was carried out in New York in May 2015 and the image and sound material gathered during the time.
The exhibition is executed in collaboration with URB 15 Festival by Kiasma Theatre.
Kaupunkitarina, nykytarina eli urbaanilegenda on kaupungistuneessa yhteisössä kiertävä, totena pidetty, mutta tavallisesti todellisuuspohjaa vailla oleva tarina. Kaupunkitarina voi olla uskottavan tuntuinen, mutta siihen saattaa sisältyä mahdottomiksi osoittautuvia yksityiskohtia. Usein kertomusten uskotaan tapahtuneen sellaiselle tutun tutulle, joka on vain niukasti kuulijan tuntemien ihmisten piirin ulkopuolella. Todellisuudessa tarina on usein kansainvälinen kiertotarina, joka on kiertänyt mantereelta toiselle. Nykytarina voi myös perustua tositapahtumaan, mutta yleensä se muuntuu ja kärjistyy matkalla saaden uusia yksityiskohtia, joita alkuperäiseen todelliseen tapahtumaan ei kuulunut.

Bobby on Queensissä syntynyt working class hero. Hän aloitti graffitien maalaamisen New Yorkin metroihin 1970-luvun alkupuolella. Nykyisin Bobby pyörittää autoromuttamoa Long Islandin laitamilla.
Frank on suomalainen graffitilegenda, joka tunnetaan myös Stadin urbaaneimpana jätkänä. Bobby on luvannut työllistää Frankin romuttamolleen. Frankin matka Bobbyn luo on symbolinen pyhiinvaellus urbaanin kulttuurin salaisille lähteille.
Sorbus-galleriassa nähtävä teos on urbaani legenda, joka pohjautuu New Yorkissa toukokuussa 2015 toteutettuun interventioon, ja sieltä koostettuun kuva- ja äänimateriaaliin.
Näyttely toteutetaan yhteistyössä Kiasma-teatterin URB 15 -festivaalin kanssa.
